On March 4, 2026, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (“NRC”) approved a construction permit for US SFR Owner, LLC, to begin construction of a nuclear power plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming. This event marks the NRC’s first approval of a construction permit for a commercial nuclear plant in nearly a decade, and the NRC’s first approval of a construction permit for a non-light water reactor in more than 40 years.

TerraPower, a subsidiary of US SFR Owner, filed its application to build the Kemmerer plant two years ago, in March 2024. The NRC’s streamlined approval comes after eighteen months of preliminary hearings and evaluations.
