On February 18, 2026, Governor of Illinois J.B. Pritzker issued Executive Order 2026-01 “to accelerate new safe nuclear power generation in Illinois,” effective immediately.

The goal of the order is “to facilitate the development of the first new nuclear facilities in Illinois in 40 years.” New construction of such nuclear facilities is only possible due to the lifting of a decades-old moratorium by the Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability (“CRGA”) Act, which takes effect on June 1st of this year.

The Illinois Commerce Commission and Illinois Power Agency have both been tasked with facilitating the endeavor, including the forming of a working group which is expected to issue a report by June 18th of this year.
