FERC Dismisses NERA Net Metering Petition

On July 16, 2020, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) voted unanimously to dismiss a Petition for Declaratory Order filed by the New England Ratepayers Association (NERA) that had requested that FERC assert federal jurisdiction over net energy metering.

NERA’s Petition drew widespread attention, and a plethora of comments were filed by public utility commissions, members of Congress, state regulators and lawmakers, solar and environmental groups, and individuals.

The Petition elicited some favorable comments, but the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) and most commenters opposed the Petition.
